AKHA Summons Two Construction Firms On Work Progress

The Akwa Ibom House of Assembly through the Committee on Finance and Appropriations has summoned the managing director and the entire management staff of WISCHINO Engineering Company and Julius Berger Construction Company to appear before the committee to brief it on progress of work as the two companies snubs the invitation of AKHA for a second time. The axe fell on the two defaulting companies during the  hearing day of the committee's investigative hearing with companies operating in the state on issues concerning payee and withholding taxes remittance to the state government in consonance with their staff strength emolument and progress of work done. It would be recalled that the committee had earlier invited WISCHINO Engineering Company and Julius Berger Construction Company to appear before members of the committee on Monday, February 1, 2021 where the two companies failed to comply as requested. The committee was stretched to its limit recently when WISCHINO Engineering Company sent its tax consult to appear before the committee, which by all indications has little or no knowledge about the work progress of the company on Internal road construction projects in Oron and Etinan-Eket road construction being the two projects currently handled by the company in the state. The chairman of the committee and the member for Ikot Abasi/Eastern Obolo State Constituency, Mr Uduak Ududoh, condemned the actions and nonchalant attitudes of the company, and summoned the managing directors and the entire management staff to appear before the committee for clarifications. The committee warned that failure to respond to the final summon, the companies will leave them with no option than employing all its legislative powers against the company, adding that the committee perceived such lackadaisical and aloof behaviours as a clear insult to the Akwa Ibom House of Assembly and the entire Akwa Ibom State. The member for Nsit Atai State Constituency, Elder Mark Esset, who is also member of the committee, frowned at the attitude of the companies, saying that it was a clear insult and disrespectful for the companies to treat invitations from the Assembly with levity. Another member of the committee and the member for Ibiono Ibom State Constituency, Mr Godwin Ekpo observed that the representative of the company lacks competency to furnish the committee with accurate information and wondered why a company should pride itself in snubbing invitations from the legislature. The presentation from the company was however declared inclusive by the committee. Also, the Managing Director of Ibom Power Plant, Mr Mmeyene Etukudoh amd the managing director of Universal Energy, Mrs Nkoyo Etuk, appeared before the committee and their presentations were equally adjudged inconclusive, and were urged to reappear before the committee on a later date. Other companies that were to appear before the committee included Base Engineering Company and Bulletin Construction Company as the two companies through letters to the committee requested for leave of absence to appear before the committee on Monday, February 15, 2021. Members of the committee who were present during the interactive session with the companies included the member for Ini State Constituency, Otuekong Emmanuel Ekpenyong, member for Mkpat Enin State Constituency, Mr Victor Ekwere and the member for Oropn/Udung Uko State Constituency, Mr Effiong Bassey
